What is Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced Ray-kee) is a technique for stress reduction and deep relaxation that also promotes healing.
Reiki refers to the universal life energy that flows through all living things. This life energy is known as Qi in China, Ki in Japan, or Prana in India, and science refers to it as the ‘biofield’. George Lucas used it as the basis for his fictional "The Force" in the Star Wars movies.
Ideally, our life energy (or Ki) should be strong and free-flowing, in turn nourishing and revitalizing our entire being. Unfortunately, that isn't always the case, which is when Reiki can be of assistance. Reiki treatments facilitate healing on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual -- by improving the natural flow of that energy.
Reiki is not a cure for a disease or illness. Rather, it works by strengthening our own natural defenses. Reiki can be very effective in relieving fatigue, nausea, pain, depression and anxiety, among other conditions. It's frequently used as a complement to traditional medicine, and is now practiced in many hospitals and medical care settings.
Reiki is not a religion and does not conflict with any religious belief. It can, however, play a role in advancing one's spiritual journey by removing energetic and emotional blockages, as well as enhancing meditative states.
Why have a Reiki treatment?
When our life energy is low, it's more difficult to deal with physical or mental stress -- we’re more susceptible to illness, pain, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety, etc.
Reiki is a technique that can increase our levels of life energy, helping us deal more effectively with stress and improving our ability to recover more quickly when we do become ill or are injured. Used regularly, it can also be a powerful tool in our personal growth and development, and even augment our natural intuitive abilities.
What happens in a Reiki session?
Reiki is administered through my hands while you lie fully clothed on a massage table -- or bed, sofa, hospital bed, etc. -- or sitting in a chair. A session usually lasts about 60 minutes, although shorter sessions are also possible.
Reiki is different from massage and reflexology, in that Reiki does not involve manipulating the tissue. This allows me to use a completely hands-off approach, holding my hands slight above your head, shoulders, chest, abdomen, legs and feet. Reiki energy then flows through my hands and into your body and energy field.
A Reiki session generally includes feelings of relaxation, peace and well-being that in turn help promote healing and personal development.

Benefits
Reiki allows muscles to relax and increases energy flow to treated areas, which in turn quickens the healing process. Practitioners and clients report help with stress, headaches, insomnia, nausea, muscle and joint pain, and other physical conditions.
Reiki also promotes psychological healing, including release of anger, fear, worry, sadness and other detrimental feelings, and replaces them with tranquility, self-worth, and confidence.
As a regular part of self-care, Reiki can also enrich meditation, increase intuition, and deepen our natural connection to both the Earth and the Higher realms (angels, spirit guides, etc.). Many clients schedule monthly sessions as a way of keeping themselves healthy in body, mind and spirit.
Use in Hospitals
Reiki is becoming increasingly popular in the medical community, with over 800 hospitals across the US offering it as an integral part of hospital care. A research study at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut indicated that Reiki:
- Improved patient sleep by 86%
- Reduced pain by 78%
- Reduced nausea by 80%
- Reduced anxiety during pregnancy by 94%.
In addition, nurses consistently report that Reiki:
- Helps patients heal faster with less pain
- Reduces stress
- Improves mental attitude and appetite, and
- Reduces negative side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and other medical procedures.
